Rule Breakers

Athletes on team sports have to settle for looking exactly their teammates, while athletes playing individual sports get to express themselves through their attire.  With the recent discussion sparked by Maria Sharapova's Wimbledon outfit, I wanted to highlight some other female athletes that have taken risks with their fashion.

Sonja Henie: Ice Skating

Wore short skirts in a time of covering up.

Suzanne Lenglen: Tennis

Head scarves, sleeveless tops, short skirts, oh my!

Amelia Earhart: Aviation

Classic!

Florence Griffith-Joyner: Track and Field

My personal favorite! Seriously, who wears one legged leggings or lace leggings, while running?

Venus and Serena Williams: Tennis

These sisters rock the tennis courts hard!

Michelle Wie: Golf

Always sporting some dangly earrings on the green.

Maria Sharapova: Tennis

Fuses street styles with athletic wear.

I LOVE SOnja Henje, she made so many ridiculously sweet films in her day and she's such a doll!

Cool idea for a post! As a swimmer I personally think caring about one's outfit for a sport is a bit ridiculous (except in costume-oriented ones like figure skating and ballet), but the girls you featured are pretty stylish!

Great post. How perfect is Amelia Earhart's leather jacket? She was so ahead of her time!!
