weather permitting

Local yellow peaches are best enjoyed on a lanai with a best friend.

chilly

These Ono Pops would be so perfect right now -- the weather here feels like I'm about to walk into a sauna. Oh, tradewinds, how I miss you so!

spices

There is a big void in my life and I need to fill it with khao soi from Spices in Honolulu. This particular bowl was one of my last meals in Hawai'i before I moved. I've already tried the khao soi at Rhong Tiam (not enough umph in the flavor; too fancy/trying to be hip interior). Next up is Talent Thai this weekend and I'm hoping to have found my go-to for khao soi here in New York.

going bananas

Back home, I ate an apple banana with peanut butter everyday. If you've never had an apple banana before, you are missing out on the Best Bananas. They're sweet, slightly tangy and firm; none of that mushy crap. I refused to eat any other banana variety, even if they were cheaper by the pound. When I lived in Oregon for a year, I got used to eating 'regular' bananas, though never by itself (that's just gross). I always kept my eye out for apple bananas, thinking that I'd stumble across a booth at a farmer's market selling these short, fat bunches.

After a few years (and lots of apple banana gorging at home in Hawai'i) I'm living in New York City and am pretty certain that I will never come across an apple banana on this side of the continent. I still eat a banana with peanut butter everyday (I'm so predictable when it comes to breakfast), but it's just the regular kind.

UNTIL NOW:

Two weeks ago, Holly's parents mailed us not one, but THREE, bunches of apple bananas from Hawai'i!

They made sure to buy them extra green, so they wouldn't be brown by the time they arrived in New York.

No matter, because apple bananas are awesome in all forms of color. You can eat them green, yellow or browned.

How I missed their slightly pink insides.

The last two.

Now, it's time to return to normal living.

I don't get enough Hawaiian food

lunch + wilson + twins

Rice, sesame tako poke, shrimp tempura, salmon pattie, alae poke and ogo poke - all from Tanioka's.

Wilson, our naughty Maltese.

And me and my mom bought the same shirts. Scary!

FYI: tako is octopus, alae is red Hawaiian salt, ogo is a crunchy seaweed and poke is pronounced poh-keh. Now you know. :)

weekend

It's crazy when people are rich enough to buy insane home accessories like this red mop rug. Such a bitch to clean because it would soak everything up. There was also a $57,860 sofa there.

Oh, and I ran into Hot Bot while I was here! Such a sweet girl, hope to see your face more often!

The next day mom brought me my usual from Sakura in Aiea. Chiso musubi, tofu salad, kabocha, choi sum and grilled salmon. Thanks, mom!

Followed by some haupia (coconut) yogurt!

wine fail

Drink a bottle of wine, I can. Open a bottle of wine, I can't.

And yes, the cork is floating in the bottle.

Yurrrm

Rice, two eggs, tuna, pickled ginger, kabocha and shoyu.

My last exam is tomorrow and I can't wait to be freeeee!

Oh wait, nvm. I have to work all day, everyday except Sundays. So much for a break! According to my friend, "at least you'll be balling."

Post Thanksgiving

My Un-Thanksgiving dinner: shrimp tempura, green salad, tofu poke (sooooo goooood), sweet potatoes, homemade green bean casserole, cranberries, gobo, cheesy potato thing.

Important to note is that there was an abundance of turkey, ham, gravy and stuffing - I just don't eat meat. lt's all good though, last year I was eating quesadillas and learning how to swear in Spanish.

Lately, the weather here has been ideal. Clear, sunny skies and lots of cool breezes. I really am thankful to get to live here, I save so much money on clothes because I only need one layer. You should see my skinny set of drawers and small closet!

How was your Thanksgiving and long weekend? Eat or do anything untraditional?

Breakfast of Champions

I know what you're thinking.

Avocados in your cereal? Are you effing crazy?

Well, yes, I am a little crazy, but I wouldn't be sharing this with you if it didn't taste good! Seriously though, it has the perfect balance: crunchy and soft, sweet and creamy. And it's a good power breakfast!

Big thanks to gliffyfille for recommending this to me in my avocado post!

Okay, now I'm off to eat this for dinner... see how versatile this meal is!

Full Of It

Dinner at Cafe Maharani.
Sooooooo good. Anything with eggplant is a guaranteed winner for me. Not for Kristen though, too spicy.
I love you Kristen! :)

Mamaki Tea

My friend's mom told me that mamaki tea was a good cleansing tea, that, uh, made you poop.

And of course I had to try it out!

So the results? Poop, no. A little weirded out, yes.

The directions said to boil 5-7 cups of water with a handful of leaves (like two or three). I didn't read well and boiled 5-7 cups of water with 5-7 leaves.

It made me feel a little... you know... woOooOo.

And what could have been a funny situation, was not because I was home alone last night! And it also didn't help that there was a shortage of people available to go out. :(

So, instead I tweaked out to the Paris collections and watched an episode of The Hills online. Nothing has changed since the last time I saw it. I still hate Spencer's sarcasm and want to punch him in the face and there's still girl drama about boys. And then I discovered that NBC airs The Alfred Hitchcock Hour and Miami Vice online!!! If you're ever bored go to NBC website and watch their vintage shows!

This is another reason why I should never live by myself. Hurry back from Vegas roomie!

Uh-Sigh-Ee Bowl & Photo Shoot

In the post before this I mentioned acai bowls. Here's a picture of one that I made and consumed today. It's some acai sorbet, honey, and granola all mixed together. So good, you must go out and find one or go to your grocery store and look for the ingredients!

Also, some exciting news: I'll be helping my dear friend and roomie out with a promotional photo shoot for the company she buys for! This is some of the clothes that we're going to be using.

My favorites. I am in love with this yellow floral top, it has pyramid studs!! And that blue floral thing is a dress with a ruffle going down one side. And a red fringed bag, fringe!

Sick

Ate breadsticks and pasta from Pizza Hut for dinner.
Had lots of chocolate candies from Carousel Candyland.
Completely forgot that I already had dinner plans later tonight with friends.

Ugh, too much food. I need to go drink some green tea to clear the crap out before my second dinner.
